Our Medical Treatments

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

Diabetes mellitus has emerged as a big burden in society. The disease affects almost all the organs of the body. This is systemic disease-causing various changes in the blood vessels of the body. Diabetes can affect the eyes and if not treated earlier can lead to blindness also. This is one of the major causes of visual impairment worldwide now. Diabetic retinopathy is a disorder of the retinal blood vessels resulting from diabetes mellitus. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy increases with the duration of diabetes. About 90% of patients having diabetes for 15 years or more will have some blood vessel damage in their eyes and a percentage of these are at risk of developing blindness.

Hence all diabetic patients should undergo routine eye examination so that any diabetic changes in the eyes can be detected earlier and treated to avoid sight-threatening complications of diabetes and prevent blindness. Diabetic eye care has been one of the most important aspects of eye care since many patients are becoming blind due to diabetic eye problems.

IOP Measuring

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) occurs due to abnormal growth of blood vessels in an infant’s eye. During development, blood vessels grow from the central part of the retina outwards. This process is completed a few weeks before the normal time of delivery. However, in premature babies, it is incomplete. If blood vessels grow normally, ROP does not occur. On the contrary, if the vessels grow and branch abnormally the baby develops ROP. It may affect vision variably depending on the degree of scarring and retinal detachment. It can also lead to permanent loss of vision. Treatment depends on the stage of the disease. In the early stages close monitoring to look for maturation of the vessels suffices. However, in slightly advanced stages laser ablation of the non-vascular retina is required to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. In very advanced stages when the retina gets detached complex surgery is required to salvage any useful vision. Also, the child needs to undergo regular check-ups to look out for refractive errors, squint, and amblyopia (lazy eye) which is commoner in these babies.

ROP Screening

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the fluid pressure inside the eye. Determining the intraocular pressure (IOP) is a part of the routine ophthalmic examination. Elevated IOP is a risk factor for glaucoma, and reducing the IOP is the only way to halt or dampen glaucoma progression. Therefore, precise measurement of IOP is critical in glaucoma management. Tonometry is the method eye care professionals use to determine this. Alshahama Eye Hospital provides an extensive and accurate view of the patient’s IOPs for the eye doctor adding value to glaucoma management.

Glaucoma Screening

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye that affects the optic nerve. It is an irreversible disease related to eye pressure. It usually affects the older age group but can affect young patients and kids also. Glaucoma symptoms are mostly recognized only at the advanced stage of the disease, hence need to be detected earlier for preventing blindness. Glaucoma symptoms such as blurring of vision can be diagnosed only in advanced stages. Patients with glaucoma are detected mainly by eye examination which includes measuring eye pressure by instruments. Eye Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve – the part of the eye that carries the images we see to the brain. When the optic nerve is damaged, blind spots start appearing, which often go unnoticed, until the nerve is significantly damaged. If proper glaucoma treatment is not taken, it could lead to total blindness.

The best treatment for glaucoma is provided at Alshahama Eye Hospital, Pattambi, Malappuram. Our specialists examine the patients carefully to provide the best care.

I & C (Incision & Curettage)

Incision and Curettage is the method of treatment for Chalazion, if other treatment has previously been unsuccessful. This operation is usually carried out under a general anesthetic. During the procedure the eyelid is numbed, and a small cut is made on the underside of the eyelid with a surgical blade to release the cyst. The cyst and cavity are drained and cleaned thoroughly. Stitches will not be required and there will be no scar visible. Incision and curettage is a safe, relatively quick, and effective procedure for the management of persistent chalazia.

Dry eye Screening

Alshahama Eye Hospital offers unique and extensive dry eye assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. We understand that each eye is different and special care is taken to create the most customized treatment plan that is personalized to every patient. The use of digital devices is associated with a reduced rate of blinking and an increased rate of tear evaporation, each of which contributes to dry eyes. We normally blink about 16 to 18 times per minute, automatically. This blink rate decreases by half when our attention is focused on a computer monitor or smartphone. Blinking spreads tears across the front surface of the eye and this lubricates and nourishes the eyes, keeping them healthy and comfortable. When the blink rate goes down by 50%, the tears evaporate and the eye becomes dry and irritated. If you’re already struggling with an existing eye condition like blepharitis or dry eye, spending long hours staring at a digital screen can aggravate the symptoms. Dry Eye is a progressive disease and if left untreated, can lead to serious vision problems and complications such as eye infections and damage to the surface of the eyes. Avoiding the situations that are most likely to cause the symptoms can help you avoid Dry Eye issues. If you work on a computer or use one at home, school, or anywhere else for an extended period, and are experiencing dry eye discomfort, it is important to seek proper eye evaluation and care.

Amblyopia Treatment

Amblyopia is when vision in one or both eyes does not develop properly during childhood. It is sometimes called lazy eye. Amblyopia is a common problem in babies and young children. A child’s vision develops in the first few years of life. It is important to diagnose and treat amblyopia as early as possible. Otherwise, a child with amblyopia will not develop a normal, healthy vision. Amblyopia is usually corrected by making the child use their weaker eye. This is often done by putting a patch over the child’s stronger eye. In some cases, eye drops can be used to blur vision in the stronger eye. Or the child may wear eyeglasses with a lens that blurs vision in that eye. It generally takes several weeks to several months to strengthen vision in the weaker eye. Once the child has better vision in that eye, they may need to wear an eye patch part-time for a few years. This is because there is a chance that the eye can weaken again. Remember to keep all appointments with the ophthalmologist who will carefully monitor your child’s vision.
